Mattress makers offered the "Two Part Mattress" so that the square section could be rotated clockwise and then flipped over and the same. The smaller head section coudl also be flipped and rotated. This simple method was a very popular housekeeping method that was over to at home consumers, too.
Here are some examples of various 2-part mattresses made in the 1800s.
The 3 part mattress enabled the housekeeperd to replace soiled or damaged sections without replacing the whole mattress. The 3 sections also offered the maximum rotations and was very light weight and easy for the staff to handle.
Mattresses that had heavy use in hotels or hospitals were made in 2 or 3 sections so that each section could be rotated and used in every position of the bed. This gave the housekeeper the ability to make sure each section got its share of the wear. This was the most practical way to extend the mattress life.
